AI Governance

Home / Learn / AI Governance
In one sentence

The rules, roles, and processes that keep an organization accountable for how it uses AI.

What it means

AI governance answers a simple question: who is responsible when an organization uses AI, and how do they exercise that responsibility? It covers policies, review processes, committees, and the records that show decisions were made properly.

It is less about the technology itself and more about how the organization makes decisions about it.

What it usually includes

Accountability

Named people who answer for each AI system.

Policy

Clear rules on what is and is not acceptable.

Risk review

A consistent way to assess potential harm before use.

Oversight

Monitoring once a system is live, and a way to raise concerns.

Why it matters

AI can affect people at scale, and its errors can be hard to see. Without governance, teams adopt tools on their own, nobody can say what is in use, and problems surface only after harm has occurred.

A simple example

Illustrative scenarioA hospital team wants to use an AI tool to summarize clinical notes. Governance determines who approves it, what privacy and safety checks it must pass, and who monitors its accuracy afterward.

A common misunderstanding

What people often thinkGovernance slows innovation down.
What is closer to the truthClear rules usually speed things up, because teams know what is required and who can say yes.
